There’s a point in life where your group chat stops being about plans… and starts being about test results.

No announcement. No warning. Just a quiet shift from:
“Fancy a pint?” to “Have you heard about Dave?”
And it’s never good news about Dave.
It’s not “Dave’s moved to Spain.”
It’s “Dave’s had a… thing.”
A “thing”, by the way, now covers:
- strokes
- heart attacks
- cancer
- anything involving the phrase “caught it early, thankfully”
- and doctors suddenly saying “we’ll keep an eye on it”
Which is not a phrase you hear in your twenties unless it’s about a train… or a kebab you regret.
And the worst part? Dave is your age.
Same sort of life. Same “I’ll sort that later” list. Probably still hasn’t fixed that thing in his house that’s been broken since 2018. And yet here we are.
Welcome to the stage of life where:
- people start dropping off the radar
- group chats go quiet for uncomfortable reasons
- and “just tired” suddenly requires follow-up questions
Meanwhile, the rest of us are still cracking on like we’ve got unlimited time.
“I’ll do it next year.”
“I’ll sort that when things calm down.”
“I’ll book it later.”
Later.

Ah yes — later.
That magical, mythical land where:
- you’ve got more money
- more energy
- fewer responsibilities
- and suddenly become the kind of person who sorts their life out properly
Spoiler: later is a lie.
Later is just “not now” wearing a sensible coat. It sounds responsible. It isn’t. It’s just procrastination with a pension plan.
We all do it. Trips we don’t book. Things we don’t start.
People we don’t call — but we’ll happily “like” their holiday photos like that counts. Health stuff we quietly ignore because Googling it feels like opening a horror film.
And look — no one’s saying you need to go full midlife crisis.
You don’t need to:
- climb Everest
- buy a motorbike
- or start posting inspirational quotes over sunsets like you’ve joined a cult
But you might want to stop acting like there’s a spare 15 years tucked away for when it’s “more convenient”.
Because inconveniently… this is it.
This is the bit you were waiting for. You’re already in it.
And if you’re not careful, you’ll spend the next decade doing what you’ve done with the last one:

Almost doing things.
Almost going places. Almost changing things. Almost saying what you meant.
Which is a very efficient way to end up with a life that looks fine… but feels like you missed your own point slightly.
So no — this isn’t a motivational speech. It’s more of a gentle reality check.
Sort the thing. Book the thing. Say the thing. At least start the thing. Because “later” is doing a suspicious amount of heavy lifting in your life right now…
…and based on current evidence, it’s not particularly reliable.
Anyway. On a completely unrelated note, I’m off to finally book that thing I’ve been putting off for three years.
Right after I sit down, scroll my phone, and ignore it for another six months… like a responsible adult.
